The weight of an individual is a result of many factors. It is the outcome of a complex relationship between the physiological, genetic and psychological constitution, environmental and cultural factors, lifestyle and of course, eating habits of the individual. There are many causes of weight gain – stress, depression, hormonal disorders, improper eating habits, sleeping patterns, etc. How can one lose weight without fixing the cause in the first place? This is where yoga comes in. Yoga addresses a human being in his/her totality. It works at the core level as it recognizes the inter-connectivity of the physical, mental and emotional body.
Artistic Yoga is a dynamic form of yoga practice that comes with certain unique advantages for those who want to lose weight. It does not believe in just burning calories and draining the whole body energy but tries to work on the endocrinal system and change the hormonal balance. For losing weight; cardio vascular training, increasing metabolic rate, detoxification, increased focus on your body and balancing of hormones are helpful. In Artistic Yoga, we train in these aspects. For example, for cardio vascular endurance we practice kriyas such as Kapal Bhati, Surya Namaskars at a faster pace and dynamic practice of asanas. We work on regulating the endocrinal function through the practice of bandhas such as Jalandhar Bandh, Mool Bandh and Udiyan Bandh. We practice pranayamas such as Anulom Vilom or alternate nostril breathing to increase the metabolic rate, reduce anxiety level and for detoxification.
