Yin Yoga emotional tension release

Yin Yoga (initially known as Daoist Yoga) was introduced to the West by Paulie Zink, a Taoist Yoga and martial Arts practitioner in the 1970ies. Paulie combined Taoist and Hatha Yoga disciplines and asanas (postures). Yin Yoga incorporates the principles of Chinese Medicine and looks at the meridians (energy channels that run through the body also known as nadis).

Yin Yoga helps to stimulate meridians and releases any stagnation or blockages. The focus is on bypassing the muscles and stretching deep connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments. Fascia, or elastic connective tissue that holds and surround every organ in the body, gets stretched in the Yin practice, when typically doesn't in the Yang styles of Yoga practices.

The principle is to create a stronger union between the body and the mind, being still, calm, observant, exploring and understanding your limits, and preparing yourself for a deeper meditation practice.

The poses are mainly practiced on the floor with the use of props such as blankets, cushions, blocks and bolsters, however, they are not exactly necessary for a successful Yin practice. Each pose is held for 2-8 minutes, and while holding, complete stillness, relaxation and observation of the breath is encouraged. The poses are initiated with only 2/3 of the body's edge or limit to give space for more opening and deeper relaxation.
